          Early Life and Boxing Debut

          Shannon Briggs, an American professional boxer, was born in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in the impoverished neighborhood of Brownsville.

          After an extended period of homelessness, Briggs turned to boxing at age 17, training at a local boxing gym. As an amateur, he won the Golden Gloves and became a state champion. In 1991, he placed second at the Pan American Games, losing in the final to Cuban boxer Felix Savon.

          By 1992, Briggs had become the U.S. national champion.
